Internet marketers, be warned! There’s a rash of new products catering to (lazy!) Adsense publishers who want to beat Google’s duplicate content filters.

They claim to provide unique content for you either with public private label rights content or by generating hybrid articles using article creator software. Here’s why these are a very bad idea.

1. Search Engines Can Detect And Filter Hybrid Content

If you want to believe marketers touting Public Private Label Rights (PLR) and rehashed articles as the way to beat Google’s duplicate content filters, do so at your own risk.

According to Chris Knight, of the EzineArticles.com article directory, even software like the EzineArticles.com CASM (Content Association Sequence Matching) system can detect exact complex sentence matches in PLR articles.

Search engines like Google are even smarter. They use more than one way of identifying duplicate content, including methods of dating to identify the page on which the original content first appeared.

So if you think these “unique” article creation tools can beat search engines like Google in the cut-and-paste content game, think again. The best way to beat the duplicate content filters is to create unique content.

2. Article Creators Violate Fair Use Guidelines

There’s no doubt that it’s unethical to steal sentences from other articles, rewrite them and call them your own. Chris Knight also warns against marketers who claim that you can take and steal any exact match sentence from any author under fair use doctrine.

It’s the equivalent of taking bits and parts of other people’s songs, remixing them and releasing them under your own name. The word for it is plagiarism and it applies as much to written content as it does to music.

If you publish hybrid content created from another author’s articles you could be guilty of plagiarism too.

3. PLR Articles Will Kill Your Brand

Building your brand through article marketing involves creating trust by sharing original ideas and content.

If you’re caught using plagiarised content on your own site or submitting it to article directories, you’ll end up destroying the trust you built between you and your target audience.

If you do use PLR articles for your Adsense site, use common sense and don’t submit them to article directories as your own, even with modifications.

And if you really want to go about it the right way, check out Chris’ Article Production Strategies Seminar and learn how to leverage article syndication to grow your adsense sales and traffic.

  2. Thanks for the outstanding issue! (I believe you mean Private rather than Public Label Rights, though.)

Private Label Rights content works only if the quality is high and the publisher makes useful changes. But few people do, creating more duplicate content.

Also, I’ve been surprised how many individual and commercial websites just steal content from print sources. As a professor, I check for this theft (plagiarism) using Turnitin.com, a tracking site with a HUGE database of printed and online documents.

Turnitin.com has an impressive search spider. But it often lists an online source as the original source, even though a printed version exists with an earlier date and different author! The articles sites and Google will also face a big challenge identifying the original article/writer.

    All the best,
    Mary

  4. Hi,

I find it surprising that expert believe that google filter duplicate content. I find often the same article in the first and second page on goole for the same keyword phrases but in different article directories.

I believe google doesn’t care about duplicate content!

  5. Personally, I hope they continue using that type of software so that their useless web sites lose their ranking and they are forced to do legitimate work for a change.

  6. Heh, that was a good point. :-) But you’re right. These quickie solutions only work until search engines learn to filter them out, and Google seems to be doing a much better job of filtering spam nowadays.

  7. Hi Priya,

John Reese, one of the grandfathers of internet marketing, openly said in a forum that “duplicate content” is a myth.

The myth has been capitalized by people selling these “unique content creator” softwares.

The danger however, is the use of PLR articles in tandem with article submission softwares. By using both, you’ll get thousands of links pointing to your site in a matter of weeks. That would be link explosion!

Now, when Google sees a sudden spike of your link popularity, you are a candidate for delisting.

  8. Pryia,

    1. Why would I want to re-publish your article on my website. It’s duplicate content!!

    2. How much more original content is actually on the net anyway unless it is stories about personal experiences or personal interviews. Type anything into Google and you will come up with hundreds if not thousands of sites. Even original content is bound to have sentances if not identical then VERY similar considering the exponential amount of content out there.

I can’t see the harm if I read say a biographical article and then rewrite it from memory giving it my slant and voice. Are you telling me Google will determine that this content is duplifcate (along with the other 250,436 other sites that also seem similar)

I don’t think you can avoid re-written duplicate material on a large small business website of over 100 pages.

    My 2 cents

  9. I think that it is too broad of a statement to simply say that all PLR products are bad. In the hands of the right marketer they can be a goldmine.

They can be used in a variety of ways including newsletters, autoresponder series, special reports and ebooks. All of these are great for building credibility and a strong online brand.

Although I do believe that many people misuse PLR products, I think you’re overstating the problem and scaring people away from a source of content that could really help them move their businesses forward.

  10. I don’t see any problem in using PLR stuff as long as the user has the patience to edit it to suit their own style of writing.

And if they use PLR products in non-SEO marketing activity like ebooks, autoresponder, etc, that is also a good way to help their business. In this way, there is no need to worry about duplicate content issues from search engine point of view.

PLR is after all a good idea if the user know how to use it. Of course, lazy marketers who copy and paste PLR stuff and put it on the website hoping to earn easy Adsense dollars are less likely to succeed because search engines are getting smarter and smarter every day. Duplicate contents can be easily filtered by present content management technology.

  11. Private Label Rights article does gives an individual the rights to re-edit or re-title the content for distribution and republish them under your own name. I’ve been using article marketing for several months now using PLR Articles and my page rank have increased from zero to 3.

But at the same time, you have to change the content to reflect your own writing style and personality, you simply can’t cut and paste PLR articles and submit them to article directories under your own name.

PLR Articles are a godsend for those who are having trouble writing their own articles and with PLR articles, it’s already done for you, all you have to do is CHANGE them.

I guess only time will tell, great article though, at least it got my attention.

  12. Hi everybody,
This is about an important but also diffecult issue, and thanks for raising the issue, Priya.
My experience is that we get better results in Google and with real visitors by writing 10 keyword focussed articles for our own website than to add 100 PLR articles, unless these have been completely rewritten.
And if so this work might have taken quite a long time. On the other hand we know that some marketers have been very successful by using PLR articles in their own version for their websites.
My problem with PLR articles are that they are very boring and often without a clue of anything new.
Some of the circulating PLR articles from the well known ‘gurus’ in marketing are really bad, e.g. writing about the darkroom under keywords of digital photography. My feeling is that I have wasted quite a lot of money in buying PLR articels from different suppliers. I admit that some are much better and decent than others.
On the other hand I have to mention the ground breaking approach to successful online presense developed by Ken Evoy. His impressive ebook is now availabe free of charge at http://contact.sitesell.com/myss/ (unbelievable) and there is absolutely no catch. His approach will never ever be dumped by Google, I am sure, as his approach is the real way to develop a long-term business on a shoestring. I go back to this big e-book again and again.
    - Have success

  14. NOTE: Even if PLR articles can be used in a variety of ways including newsletters, autoresponder series, special reports, ebooks etc. The only way to make sure that they are read by large number of people is by being the first few people to publish them, or else the topic will be crowded and will lose its value over time.
